Chinaza Is Safe as Enugu Government Provides Shelter, Care for 16-Year-Old Girl

The Enugu State Government has provided safe shelter and support for Chinaza, a 16-year-old girl from Nnewe community in Aninri Local Government Area. The intervention follows public outcry over reports that her father allegedly raped her before her community banished her.

The Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development has taken the teenager into protective care. The government says her safety, welfare and recovery remain its priorities.

The intervention reinforces the need for stronger child protection measures and community action against abuse. It also comes amid wider concerns about violence against vulnerable people, including a reported child abuse case in Anambra State.

Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Ngozi Enih, assured the public that the ministry would prioritise Chinaza’s physical and emotional well-being. She said the teenager would receive appropriate psychosocial support to help her process the trauma and begin healing.

Enih stressed that no child should face blame, rejection or punishment for experiencing sexual abuse. Instead, every child deserves protection, dignity, compassion and access to justice.

The ministry’s response highlights the importance of survivor-centred care. It also reflects broader efforts to improve child welfare, including the Enugu Government’s partnership with UNICEF to tackle malnutrition.

Furthermore, the state continues to face calls for stronger legal and institutional responses to abuse. The CLEEN Foundation’s call for an agency to implement Enugu’s VAPP Law underscores the importance of accountability and support for survivors.

Meanwhile, efforts to apprehend Chinaza’s father are ongoing. The statement said the alleged perpetrator was reportedly on the run.

The ministry pledged to work with relevant authorities to ensure that the case receives appropriate attention. However, the allegations remain subject to investigation and due process.

Effective investigations and coordinated responses are essential when cases involve vulnerable children. Recent security developments include the launch of a Violent Crime Response Unit in Enugu, which aims to strengthen responses to serious crimes.

The government’s intervention also highlights the importance of institutions that protect residents’ rights. Enugu’s wider development efforts include initiatives focused on public welfare and inclusive services, as outlined in its plans to sustain development gains.

Government Thanks Public for Raising the Alarm

Chinaza is safe after the Enugu State Government provided shelter, psychosocial support and care for the 16-year-old girl following reported abuse.

The ministry thanked members of the public who raised concerns and brought Chinaza’s situation to the government’s attention. It said public awareness and timely reporting can help authorities intervene when children face danger.

Communities also have a responsibility to protect vulnerable residents rather than reject or punish survivors. Government-backed community initiatives, including the CSDA’s sensitisation exercise across six Enugu communities, demonstrate the value of engaging residents on local needs and welfare.

Other grassroots programmes have focused on improving access to essential services. These include rural development projects across seven Enugu South communities and the CSDA’s people-oriented development interventions.

The Igbo-Eze South chairman’s commendation of grassroots development also highlights the role of community-focused programmes. Meanwhile, Rep. Sam Chimaobi Atu has praised the state’s grassroots development efforts.

Enugu Reaffirms Commitment to Child Protection

Under Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, the Enugu State Government says it will continue strengthening systems that protect children and support vulnerable residents. The administration has also highlighted human development in its wider policy agenda.

Its reported achievements include investments in healthcare, education and social programmes, as outlined in Peter Mbah’s compendium of more than 10,000 achievements.

The government’s education agenda also features in its efforts to expand school infrastructure and improve learning. These public services form part of the wider environment needed to support children’s development and well-being.

Other initiatives seek to improve essential facilities, including the government’s plans to upgrade water and solar power at the NYSC Awgu camp and water projects serving SUMAS and its teaching hospital.

The state has also emphasised inclusive planning and long-term public welfare through its sustainable development agenda.

For Chinaza, the immediate priority remains safety, compassionate care and the opportunity to rebuild her life. The ministry has assured the public that she will receive support as the authorities pursue the case.

The government urged residents to continue speaking up when children face abuse or neglect. It reaffirmed its commitment to building a society where every child receives protection, dignity and the chance to heal.
