Speaking at the commissioning, SUMAS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. James Ogbonna, thanked the state government and CSDA. He described the intervention as timely, especially with students returning to campus.

Ogbonna said the university continued to expand its academic programmes and infrastructure. He attributed its rapid growth to the support and interventions of Governor Mbah’s administration.

The vice-chancellor also disclosed that SUMAS planned to admit thousands of additional students in October. He said the expected increase made access to reliable water even more important.

The development forms part of wider discussions around Governor Mbah’s development projects across Enugu State. The government has also received attention for its plans to strengthen the state’s economy and infrastructure.

Ogbonna said SUMAS currently offers several programmes in specialised fields. These include pharmacology, nanotechnology, dentistry, prosthetics and nanomedicine.

He also listed some of the university’s infrastructure projects. They include a completed library building and an administrative block.

According to the vice-chancellor, the institution is also pursuing major development projects. These include plans involving solar power, artificial intelligence and faculty infrastructure.

Ogbonna further announced that the university had scheduled its first convocation ceremony for December. The institution continues to expand as it prepares to accommodate more students.

Ogbonna stressed that reliable water supply remained essential to the university’s operations. He said the need had increased alongside student enrolment and the expansion of medical services.

The intervention also supports SUMASTH and the state-owned Mother and Child Hospital. Both facilities require dependable water access to support healthcare delivery and patient care.

The vice-chancellor described the projects as a practical response to the needs of the university community. He also noted that nearby residents would benefit from the improved water supply.

The development adds to ongoing efforts to improve essential services across the state. Other community-focused initiatives include the CSDA’s participatory rural appraisal exercise in six Enugu communities.

President of the SUMAS Students’ Union Government, Comrade Cletus Ikeuwa, also praised the governor. He thanked the state government for addressing students’ water needs through CSDA.

Ikeuwa said the intervention had brought relief to students across the institution. He particularly highlighted its benefits for residents of the university’s male hostel.

The water supply is expected to support daily activities within the campus. It will also serve patients and other beneficiaries who rely on the institutions.

The project reflects the importance of basic amenities in educational environments. Access to water supports sanitation, student welfare and the daily running of university facilities.

SUMASTH and Mother and Child Hospital Welcome Intervention

Management representatives, medical staff and patients at SUMASTH and the Mother and Child Hospital also welcomed the projects. They praised the state government for improving facilities and supporting a more suitable environment for healthcare delivery.

Reliable water remains important for hospitals and other medical institutions. It supports routine cleaning, sanitation and several daily clinical activities.

The new and rehabilitated boreholes will therefore serve more than the university alone. Their distribution network also extends the benefits to the teaching hospital, the Mother and Child Hospital and nearby residents.

The intervention also connects with broader efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure in Enugu State. Readers can find related coverage in the report on Enugu’s healthcare facilities and development priorities.

CSDA Reaffirms Commitment to Basic Services

Earlier, CSDA General Manager, Hon. Monday Diamond Ani, attended the commissioning. He was accompanied by Hon. Clifford Obe, member representing Igbo-Eze Constituency II in the Enugu State House of Assembly.

Ani reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to addressing critical gaps in basic services. He said the projects had directly improved the welfare of their beneficiaries.

He also stressed the need to identify community needs before implementing projects. According to him, CSDA must ensure that its interventions follow established procedures and guidelines.

Ani further acknowledged Governor Mbah’s continued support for the agency. He said the state government remained committed to improving access to essential amenities.

The agency’s approach also reflects the role of community-driven development in delivering local infrastructure. Another related initiative is the proposed agro-mechanisation project aimed at supporting development and employment in Enugu.

NG-CARES Programme Supports Water Supply Project

The four boreholes were provided through CSDA under the Nigerian Community Action Resilience and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES) programme. The intervention aims to improve access to potable water and strengthen basic service delivery.

Two of the boreholes underwent rehabilitation, while the other two were newly constructed. The project also included water distribution systems and storage tanks.

The facilities currently serve SUMAS, SUMASTH and the state-owned Mother and Child Hospital. Residents living close to the institutions also benefit from the improved supply.

Ani said the commissioning demonstrated the government’s commitment to essential services. He added that the project reinforced CSDA’s mandate to support community-driven development and deliver critical infrastructure.

The intervention provides water access to institutions serving education and healthcare needs. It also addresses a basic requirement for the wider host community.
