NDC Enugu Hails SKC Ogbonnia’s Appointment, Says His Experience Will Strengthen Party’s Campaign

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State has welcomed Dr. SKC Ogbonnia’s appointment as Director of Policy, Research and Documentation on the party’s National Campaign Council.

The state chapter described the appointment as recognition of Ogbonnia’s leadership, experience, intellectual contributions and commitment to the party’s growth.

In a congratulatory statement sent to journalists in Enugu on Sunday, the party said the appointment reflected the confidence of its national leadership in Ogbonnia’s abilities.

The statement was signed by the NDC Enugu State Secretary, Dr. Sebastine Chukwuebuka Okafor.

The party said Ogbonnia would contribute to policy formulation, research, documentation and the development of strategies for its 2027 election campaign.

The appointment follows the NDC’s wider preparations for the next general elections. Read more about the NDC’s National Presidential Campaign Council plans.

Okafor said Ogbonnia had demonstrated leadership, dedication and commitment to the NDC’s ideals, particularly in Enugu State.

He noted that the appointee had remained a key figure in strengthening the party’s structures and promoting its vision.

The state secretary expressed confidence that Ogbonnia would draw on his academic and public service experience to develop policies supporting the campaign of presidential candidate Peter Obi and his running mate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The party’s emphasis on grassroots engagement also features in its regional activities. Its youth wing previously launched NDC grassroots mobilisation across the South-East.

Okafor said Ogbonnia’s understanding of Nigeria’s political environment and international affairs would contribute to the National Campaign Council’s work.

He added that the appointment presented an opportunity to develop policies addressing the country’s economic, social and political challenges.

Appointment Comes as Nigerians Seek Practical Solutions

Okafor said Ogbonnia’s appointment came at a time when Nigerians wanted credible alternatives and practical solutions to their daily challenges.

“Dr. SKC Ogbonnia’s appointment comes at a time when Nigerians are looking for credible alternatives, practical solutions and leadership that understands their daily challenges,” he said.

He added that Ogbonnia’s background in academia and public service equipped him to contribute evidence-based policies grounded in research.

Okafor expressed confidence that the appointment would help the NDC communicate its programmes clearly and present workable solutions to national challenges.

The party’s approach to organising its political structures has also generated discussion about the roles of support groups. See the report on how the NDC directed state chapters to stop collecting support group registration fees.

The NDC has also faced public discussions about campaign structures and organisational responsibilities. The OK Movement’s demand for an apology from the NDC provides further context on those debates.

NDC Says Research Will Strengthen Campaign Messages

The Enugu chapter said Ogbonnia would play an important role in ensuring that campaign messages rested on clear policy proposals, reliable information and documented positions on national issues.

Okafor stressed that successful campaigns require more than slogans and promises. He said parties must understand the problems confronting citizens, research their causes and explain how their proposed policies would address them.

“A successful political campaign requires more than slogans and promises. It requires an understanding of the problems confronting the people, research into their causes and practical policies that explain how a government intends to address them,” he said.

He described Ogbonnia’s assignment as important to shaping the NDC’s campaign direction and helping Nigerians understand the ideas and programmes of its candidates.

The party’s political activities in Enugu have also attracted attention over security and campaign access. Read the report on the NDC’s allegations of obstruction during Peter Obi’s visit to Yelwata.

Other reports have examined disputes involving the party’s activities in the state, including the Enugu Government’s response to NDC airport and secretariat incidents.

Opposition candidates have also called for investigations into reported incidents. See the report on Enugu political violence and demands for a police probe.

Ogbonnia’s Role in the NDC’s 2027 Campaign

The Director of Policy, Research and Documentation is expected to help develop and organise policy materials for the party’s campaign.

According to Okafor, Ogbonnia’s experience would help connect research and intellectual work with Nigeria’s political and socioeconomic realities.

The state secretary said the appointment would also encourage NDC members and stakeholders in Enugu State, who have continued working to strengthen the party’s structures.

He expressed confidence that the appointment would support efforts to build a united party capable of addressing Nigerians’ concerns.

Policy debates remain a significant part of preparations for the 2027 elections. For example, Pat Utomi has stated his position on Peter Obi accepting a vice-presidential slot.

Obi’s political record has also attracted competing claims. Read about the Anambra Government’s challenge to Obi over his presidential campaign pledge and the Presidency’s response to his claims about Anambra’s finances.

The debate has continued, with Soludo insisting that Obi left Anambra in debt. Meanwhile, Umahi has questioned whether Obi is the South-East’s best presidential candidate.

Other candidates have outlined different policy proposals ahead of the election. These include Sowore’s pledges on wages and electricity and Adebayo’s call for youths to take politics beyond social media.

As the 2027 election approaches, Ogbonnia’s appointment adds a policy and research role to the NDC’s national campaign structure. The Enugu chapter said it expects his experience to support the development of clear proposals and effective campaign strategies.
