Engr. Mike Chikosolu Ogbuekwe of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been declared winner of the Nkanu East Local Government Area chairmanship election. Ogbuekwe secured the highest number of votes in the September 26, 2026 poll, according to the result supplied from the collation exercise.
The result places Ogbuekwe ahead of the New Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates. The NDC recorded some votes, while the PDP polled few votes in the election.
Ogbuekwe was declared chairman-elect at the Nkanu East Local Government Council Headquarters. The declaration followed the completion of voting and collation by the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC).
Ogbuekwe Declared Chairman-Elect
The declaration brings the Nkanu East chairmanship contest to its formal conclusion. Ogbuekwe will now await the swearing-in process before assuming the responsibilities of the council chairman.
The election followed weeks of political campaigns, consultations and grassroots mobilisation across Nkanu East. Ogbuekwe and his campaign team had visited communities and wards while engaging residents, political stakeholders and community leaders ahead of the poll.
The APC had earlier selected Ogbuekwe as its candidate after the party’s direct primary. Reports at the time confirmed that outgoing chairman Sydney Edeh had completed his two-term tenure and was replaced as the party’s candidate by Ogbuekwe.

The September 26 election had been scheduled by ENSIEC as part of elections into the 17 local government chairmanship positions and 260 councillorship seats across Enugu State. Political Leaders Gather to Celebrate Victory

Among those listed at the gathering were outgoing Nkanu East chairman Hon. Sydney Okechukwu Edeh and Hon. Okey Mbah. Barr. Chimobi Okorie, Enugu State Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development, and Hon. Paul Nnajiofor, Special Adviser to the Governor on Legislative Matters, were also present.
Hon. Monday-Diamond Ani, General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of the Enugu State Community and Social Development Agency, also attended the gathering. Other political leaders, government officials, party stakeholders and community representatives joined the celebration.
Edeh’s presence added significance to the gathering because he is completing his tenure as chairman. He joined other stakeholders in congratulating Ogbuekwe after the latter was declared chairman-elect.
The transition follows months of political mobilisation involving the outgoing administration and the APC campaign organisation. Earlier in the process, Edeh Inaugurated APC Campaign Organisation for Ogbuekwe as the party prepared for the local government election.
The campaign organisation later intensified its grassroots engagement across the local government. It focused on taking the party’s message to communities and wards ahead of the September 26 poll.
Ogbuekwe Describes Declaration as Emotional
After his declaration, Ogbuekwe described hearing his name announced by the ENSIEC representative as an emotional and unforgettable moment. He said the outcome represented the culmination of months of campaigns, meetings, travels, challenges, prayers and support.
The chairman-elect also expressed appreciation to Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for his leadership and support during the political process. He further thanked God and the people of Nkanu East for the confidence placed in him through the election.
“I do not take this responsibility for granted,” Ogbuekwe said in his post-election message. He also acknowledged the responsibility attached to the mandate and the expectations that come with his emergence as chairman-elect.
The result follows a campaign that featured engagements with community leaders, youths, women and other residents. Ogbuekwe’s campaign also focused on issues including infrastructure, security, agriculture, employment and human capital development.
