MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has attributed the reduction in electricity supply across Enugu State to a drop in power generation.
The company said the decline in generation had resulted in low system frequency, prompting the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to introduce load shedding.
Head of Communications at MEDL, Mr Emeka Ezeh, disclosed this in a statement on Monday in Enugu.
According to Ezeh, the development has affected the amount of electricity allocated to the distribution company. Consequently, MEDL cannot fully meet its daily service-level commitments to customers.
The latest development comes amid other electricity-related concerns in Enugu, including a power outage in parts of New Haven previously attributed to a vehicular accident.
MainPower Explains Cause of Load Shedding

Ezeh explained that the current supply challenges stem from reduced energy generation and the resulting low system frequency.
He said TCN had responded by rationing the available electricity through load shedding. The measure has affected the energy allocation received by MEDL and reduced the electricity it can distribute across its network.
The development highlights the challenges facing electricity distribution when available generation falls below demand. It also comes as Nigeria continues to experience changes in electricity availability and pricing, including the increase in petrol prices following Dangote Refinery’s adjustment of its gantry rate.
MEDL Promises Fair Distribution of Available Electricity
Despite the supply constraints, MainPower assured customers that it was closely monitoring the situation.
The company said it would continue distributing its available energy allocation fairly across its network. It also expressed hope that normal electricity supply would return soon.
“MEDL wishes to assure its customers that it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to distribute the available energy allocation fairly across its network,” Ezeh said.
The company did not provide a specific timeline for the restoration of normal supply. However, it said it remained hopeful that the situation would improve soon.
MainPower Apologises to Customers
MEDL acknowledged the inconvenience the reduced supply could cause households, businesses and other electricity users.
The company apologised to customers and thanked them for their patience, understanding and continued cooperation.
“MEDL sincerely regrets the inconvenience this situation may cause its esteemed customers and appreciates their patience, understanding, and continued cooperation,” Ezeh added.
The assurance comes as electricity access remains important to businesses and residents across Enugu State. Reliable power also supports the state’s economic ambitions, including those highlighted in the report on NACCIMA’s support for Enugu’s ₦30 billion economic ambition.
Electricity Challenges Remain a Concern
The current load shedding has affected MEDL’s ability to meet its daily service commitments. The company said it would continue sharing the available electricity fairly while monitoring developments.
Meanwhile, electricity consumers across Nigeria continue to follow changes in power generation, distribution and related infrastructure. The Federal Government has also pursued measures to improve electricity services, including the launch of a smart self-service filling station by NNPC, which reflects wider efforts to modernise essential services.
In Enugu, electricity infrastructure remains important to homes, businesses and public institutions. The state’s development plans also depend on reliable services, as seen in reports on Enugu’s efforts to sustain its development gains.
The power supply reduction also raises concerns for small businesses that rely on electricity to operate. Broader development initiatives, such as the South-East agro-development programme launched in Enugu, depend on infrastructure that supports economic activity.
The current situation is separate from other safety concerns involving electricity infrastructure. The SEEECA has warned South-East residents about electrocution risks during flooding and windstorms.
MainPower said it would continue monitoring the situation and distributing available electricity across its network. Customers will be watching for improved generation and the restoration of normal supply in the state.
For now, MEDL has urged customers to remain patient as the electricity supply constraints continue.
