Enugu Groups Urge Mbah to Nominate a Woman for Vacant Senate Seat
A coalition of Enugu groups urge Mbah to pick a woman for senate seat. The coalition of political advocacy groups in Enugu State saturday intensified calls for gender inclusion in the National Assembly, urging Governor Peter Mbah to nominate a woman to fill the vacant Enugu North senatorial seat.
The groups, led by Loudest Voices for Peter Mbah, said such a move would not only address the current vacancy but also make history as the first time a woman would represent Enugu State in the Senate.
The appeal was made on Saturday in Enugu during a press briefing convened by the group’s coordinator, Onyinye Mamah, who stressed the need for deliberate efforts to promote female participation in governance.
Push for gender inclusion
Mamah argued that the nomination of a woman would send a strong signal about the state’s commitment to equity, inclusiveness, and progressive politics.
According to her, women across the Enugu North Senatorial District possess the competence and leadership qualities required to effectively represent the people at the federal level.
She particularly highlighted Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area as one of the areas blessed with capable women who have distinguished themselves in various fields and are well-positioned to deliver quality representation.
Mamah noted that beyond competence, the symbolic importance of such a decision cannot be overstated, especially at a time when conversations around gender balance in Nigeria’s political space have gained momentum.
“This is an opportunity for Enugu State to lead by example,” she said, adding that elevating a woman to the Senate would align with ongoing advocacy for increased female participation in governance across the country.
Call for stakeholders’ support
Also speaking, a member of the group, Ifeyinwa Ojukwu, called on political stakeholders, party leaders, and relevant authorities to rally support for the emergence of a qualified female candidate.
She described the move as a “progressive and bold step” capable of setting a precedent for other states to follow.
Ojukwu maintained that while merit should remain a key consideration, there are numerous women within the district who meet the criteria and can effectively compete and deliver on the mandate.
She added that supporting a female nominee would not only deepen democracy but also broaden representation by ensuring that women’s voices are better reflected in legislative processes.
Confidence in Mbah’s leadership
The coalition expressed confidence in the leadership style of Governor Mbah, citing his perceived commitment to meritocracy, equity, and inclusive governance.
They noted that the governor has, in various instances, demonstrated a willingness to embrace progressive policies and reforms, expressing optimism that he would give due consideration to their request.
The groups also reaffirmed their support for the governor’s administration, pledging continued backing for his policies and programmes aimed at transforming the state.
They argued that granting their request would further consolidate public trust and reinforce the administration’s image as one that prioritises fairness and equal opportunity.
Vacancy sparks political consultations
The Enugu North senatorial seat became vacant following the death of Senator Okey Ezea, a development that has triggered political consultations among stakeholders across the district.
The vacuum has opened up discussions on succession, with various interest groups and political actors weighing in on who should take over the mantle of representation.
Observers note that while such vacancies often attract intense political contestation, the current advocacy for a female nominee introduces a fresh dimension to the conversation.
Broader implications
Analysts say the push for a woman to occupy the senatorial seat reflects a growing recognition of the need to bridge gender gaps in Nigeria’s political landscape, where women remain underrepresented in elective positions.
If the call is heeded, Enugu State could set a benchmark for inclusive representation, potentially influencing similar decisions in other parts of the country.
For now, all eyes remain on Governor Mbah and key political stakeholders as consultations continue over the choice of a suitable candidate to fill the vacant seat.
Whether the advocacy will translate into concrete action remains to be seen, but the campaign has undoubtedly brought the issue of gender inclusion in governance to the forefront of political discourse in Enugu State
