Edo Varsity Lecturer Dies After Alleged Encounter With Sex Worker

A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, has died after reportedly collapsing in a hotel room in Edo State.

The Edo varsity lecturer reportedly checked into the hotel with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker identified as Angela Defa Jacob.

The incident occurred on Sunday at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.

According to reports, Uwuigbe allegedly became unresponsive shortly after the pair had a sexual encounter. The woman reportedly left the room briefly to buy water for him. When she returned, she allegedly found the lecturer lying motionless inside the room.

Police Arrest Three People

The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident on Tuesday. Police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem said the command received a report concerning Uwuigbe on October 5, 2026, at about 8pm.

According to the police, the lecturer had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of the 21-year-old woman.

Ikoedem said Uwuigbe later asked the woman to purchase water for him. She reportedly returned to find him dead in the hotel room. The police have since arrested three people in connection with the incident.

Those in custody include the hotel owner, the hotel manager and the woman who was reportedly with the lecturer. The police said an investigation is ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death. His remains have also been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.

Ambrose Alli University Confirms Lecturer Was Staff

Ambrose Alli University has confirmed that Uwuigbe was a staff member of the institution. The university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, said the incident did not happen on the university campus.

He also clarified that the woman involved was not a student of the institution.

According to the university spokesperson, the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s private activities were separate from his official duties at the university. The university therefore noted that the incident happened outside the institution.

Investigation Continues

The circumstances surrounding Uwuigbe’s death remain under investigation. Although reports have linked his death to the encounter at the hotel, the police have not publicly established the medical cause of death.

Authorities are expected to rely on the investigation and medical examination to determine what led to the lecturer’s death. The arrests are also expected to help investigators establish what happened inside the hotel room before Uwuigbe was found dead.

For now, the police have not disclosed further details about the investigation or indicated whether anyone will face charges. The incident has drawn attention in Ekpoma, where Ambrose Alli University is located. However, authorities have yet to release further information on the exact cause of death.
