Why Ronaldo Left Portugal Camp: Captain Accuses Jorge Jesus of Breaking His Word

Cristiano Ronaldo has explained why he left the Portugal national team camp, accusing coach Jorge Jesus of breaking his word twice.

The 41-year-old Portugal captain gave his account in a lengthy statement released on X on Tuesday. Ronaldo said he wanted to explain directly what happened during the team’s latest training camp.

He said he had prepared a farewell letter to the Portuguese people after the 2026 World Cup. However, Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença urged him to continue with the national team.

Ronaldo also supported the appointment of Jorge Jesus as Portugal coach. He said he believed Jesus was the right choice and was pleased when the federation presented him as the new manager.

Jesus Promised Ronaldo a Role in His Plan

Ronaldo said Jesus later met with him and explained his plans for the national team. According to the captain, the coach told him that his presence was important to the project.

Ronaldo said Jesus also presented a plan for managing his participation. He claimed the coach promised that he would play the first and final matches.

Jesus also told him he would make three or four changes during matches. Ronaldo said the plan was designed to manage his physical condition.

There was also an early proposal for Ronaldo to skip Portugal’s trips to Norway and Denmark. The captain said he immediately rejected the suggestion.

Ronaldo explained that remaining in Portugal would not set the right example. He said he could not continue as captain while refusing to travel with the team.

Ronaldo Says Jesus Changed the Plan

Ronaldo played against Wales and was later substituted. He said he accepted the decision without complaint and handed the captain’s armband to Bruno Fernandes.

However, he said the situation changed on the day of the Norway match. Ronaldo claimed Jesus unexpectedly asked whether he was fit enough to play for 30 minutes.

The Portugal captain said he was focused on his physical recovery at the time. He had expected to play only in the later match at the Dragão.

Despite that, Ronaldo agreed to the request. He said Jesus told him to prepare because he would play for 30 minutes.

Ronaldo then warmed up from half-time. However, the coach did not send him onto the pitch.

He described the situation as a breach of the agreement they had reached. Ronaldo also apologised for failing to greet supporters after the match.

He described that decision as his own failure and accepted responsibility for it.

Second Disagreement Leads to Ronaldo’s Exit

Ronaldo said he later held a private meeting with Jesus and Al Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho.

According to Ronaldo, the meeting produced an agreement about how Jesus would explain the situation publicly. He said the two sides prepared and approved a list of points.

Ronaldo expected Jesus to clarify the matter during his next press conference. However, he claimed the coach’s comments did not match what they had agreed.

The Portugal captain said this represented the second time Jesus had broken his word. He then decided to leave the national team camp.

Ronaldo said he did not want to wait for another disagreement. He explained that honesty remains important in relationships between people.

He also apologised to his teammates and the Portuguese public. Ronaldo accepted that the federation should punish his decision to leave the camp.

He said there should be no mitigating factors because the rules should apply equally to everyone.

Ronaldo Rules Out Ceremonial Portugal Farewell

Despite the dispute, Ronaldo said he remains interested in competing for Portugal.

The captain rejected the idea of returning only for ceremonial farewell matches. He said his priority when representing Portugal is to compete and help the team win.

Ronaldo said he would remain available if he was physically fit and performing well for his club. He also said he would return after serving the suspension imposed on him.

The veteran forward stressed that his commitment to Portugal remains unchanged. He said his desire is to compete for the national team rather than simply receive a farewell appearance.

Ronaldo ended his statement by insisting that his account represented the truth as he understood it. He said he remains ready to compete and win for Portugal.
