The Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) says it is more than 90 per cent ready for the September 26 Local Government Council Elections.
The commission will conduct elections across the 17 local government areas in Enugu State.
The polls will determine candidates for 17 chairmanship positions and 260 councillorship seats.
ENSIEC Executive Chairman, Prof. Christian Ngwu, disclosed the level of preparation on Monday in Enugu.
Ngwu said the commission had reached the final stage of preparations for the elections.
He explained that officials were currently completing the remaining arrangements ahead of the polls.
ENSIEC Says Election Preparations Are Over 90% Complete
According to Ngwu, only a few tasks remain before ENSIEC concludes its preparations.
He said the commission was putting finishing touches to the remaining electoral arrangements.
“It is only few things remaining and we are finalising and putting finishing touches on them,” he said.
The chairman explained that ENSIEC had already trained trainers who would handle the training of ad hoc personnel.
The commission has also advertised for the recruitment of ad hoc staff.
Their training is expected to begin within the next few days.
Ngwu added that almost all election materials required for the exercise were already available.
The commission plans to move non-sensitive materials from its headquarters to the various council areas.
He said the materials would leave the ENSIEC headquarters in Enugu by Thursday, September 17, at the latest.
The preparations come as political parties continue their grassroots mobilisation across the state.

Sensitive Materials to Remain Secure
ENSIEC also disclosed that sensitive election materials would be handled differently.
Ngwu said the commission would receive and keep the sensitive materials in a secure location.
He did not disclose the exact location where the materials would be stored.
The commission is also working on its logistics arrangements for election day.
Ngwu said ENSIEC was close to finalising agreements with transport unions and companies.
The arrangements will provide transportation support for the election exercise.
Adequate logistics will be important because voting will take place across all 17 local government areas.
The commission also said it was working with security agencies to ensure a peaceful election.
Police to Lead Election Security Arrangement
Ngwu said ENSIEC was already concluding its security arrangements with relevant agencies.
The Nigeria Police Force will serve as the lead security agency during the election.
The commission expects the security arrangement to provide a safe environment for voters, electoral officials and candidates.
The chairman urged residents to participate in the September 26 polls without fear.
He called on eligible voters to come out and vote for their preferred candidates.
Ngwu assured residents that ENSIEC would provide a level playing field for all candidates.
He also promised that the commission would work toward a peaceful and credible election.

ENSIEC Awaits Authentic Voters Register
Another key part of the commission’s preparations involves the voters register.
Ngwu said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would soon provide ENSIEC with the authentic voters register for the state.
The register will support the commission’s planning and conduct of the local government elections.
ENSIEC is expected to use the register as part of the process leading to voting on September 26.
The commission has also taken steps to educate residents about the voting process.
Ngwu said ENSIEC had pasted notices of election across the local government areas.
The notices include information on how voters should cast their ballots correctly.
They also contain guidance on appropriate conduct during and after voting.
The commission wants voters and other participants to follow the rules throughout the electoral process.

A total of 11 political parties are expected to participate in the September 26 elections.
The parties will field candidates for the various chairmanship and councillorship positions.
The election will therefore involve political contests across all 17 local government areas.
The 260 councillorship positions will also form an important part of the exercise.
The outcome will determine the political leadership of councils and wards across Enugu State.

ENSIEC Completes Train-the-Trainer Programme
ENSIEC had also concluded a train-the-trainer workshop for its officials two weeks before Ngwu’s latest update.
The programme formed part of the commission’s preparations for the September 26 polls.
Participants included electoral officers assigned to the 17 local government areas.
The commission trained 17 Electoral Officers and 17 Assistant Electoral Officers.
Seven directors also participated in the training exercise.
Five commissioners and an administrative secretary were also listed among the participants.
The training is expected to prepare officials for their responsibilities during the election.
ENSIEC will also train the ad hoc personnel who will support the electoral process.
The commission said the training would take place within days.
